SAILFIT on the Gulf

SAILFIT has been based out of Clearwater for some time now and Meka is actually the Laser District 13 secretary. So we are pretty rooted in the the Gulf Coast. Every time we hear from someone the first question we are asked is "What's going on in the Gulf?" We are all concerned about the oil in the Gulf and some oil has already come ashore in the pan-handle. There is a major US SAILING event in the Pan Handle that was almost postponed or moved to another location. The rest of Florida is organizing for a massive effort to keep the oil off the beaches. The oil has the potential to come ashore on the West Coast and follow the Gulf current around the Florida Keys and into the Gulf Stream on the East Coast and run up the East Coast of the US. Florida could have oil come ashore on both coasts. This would certainly affect our sailing, and be devastating economically for Florida.

SAILFIT along with the people of Florida and the entire Gulf Coast are becoming increasingly infuriated by the whole matter. The eco systems are forever damaged and many small business and families are affected.

So far Clearwater Beach is clear and we are going to make the most of it while we can. We are looking forward to a great sailing season and hope to see a lot of you down south this winter.
